Work experience

Dan is an expert in the field of youth participation, with 20 years experience working with children and young people in the voluntary, public, for-profit and academic sectors.

Dan is a Director of People Dialogue and Change, a consultancy providing capacity building services for organisations who wish to develop their approach to youth participation and youth engagement. He has led work on behalf of UK Youth Parliament, The Council of Europe, The British Youth Council, The Department of Health, The Railway Children, The National Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children, The 2017-18 Trio of EU Presidencies, The UK Parliament, The Commonwealth Youth Programme, and Government Office for The North West, as well as a variety of local authorities, voluntary organisations and research institutions in the UK and across Europe. His work includes a variety of multi-county youth participation initiatives for organisations such as Eurochild and The European Patient forum and a number Pan-European training courses for organisations such as Salto Inclusion and Salto Participation.

Dan is an experienced researcher and evaluator with a research focus on children and young people's participation and using participatory research to enable young people to influence policy and strategy. Through his role in the Pool of European Youth Researchers coordinated by the partnership between the European Commission and The Council of Europe he was invited to be one of two researchers re-designing the consultation process behind the EU’s 6th Cycle of Structured Dialogue, arguably the largest participatory process in the world. This work was widely regarded as highly successful. It engaging nearly 50,000 young people from across the EU, was instrumental in developing the new European Youth Goals and informed the direction of the future EU Youth Dialogue.

Dan is an Associate Director at the University of Central Lancashire’s Centre for Children and Young People’s Participation, the only research centre in the world focused exclusively on participation. He is co-editor of a book for Palgrave Macmillan on children and young people’s participation, citizenship and intergenerational relations and is currently undertaking his professional doctorate on dialogue and knowledge production between young people and adults.
