This is an article - reflection dedicated to a small experiment we did during the CivicART Lab in February 2026, part of CivicArt: Capacity-Building for
Art-Based Civic Education (Project No. 101184018, Erasmus+ ERASMUS-YOUTH-2024-CB)
To explore the possibility of not gathering expectations from participants at. the beginning of the training
Asking participants to name their expectations at the start of a training is one of the most established rituals of
non-formal education. It signals participant-centredness, gives the facilitation team a first read of the group, and
marks the symbolic entrance into a different kind of learning space. It is, in many ways, a pedagogical reflex -so embedded in our practice that we rarely stop to question it.
