This exercise aims to illustrate the concept of a pathway. It helps to show a real-life example of an excluded young person’s experiences through his/her own eyes.

Description of the tool

The person makes a presentation of the journey she followed to get to where s/he is today. S/he should start his/her description at a point before their first activity in this area and explain to the group the events mostly relevant to their development. The pathway can most easily be shown visually by drawing a large map. By using symbols and using the road to illustrate their journey, the person can show points where their path changed directions, faced a rocky patch, became smooth again, etc.

The personal pathway have been well received at both seminars. A personal testimonial can go a long way in helping people “get the message”, as it is a real person talking to them. Also, the impact of on an individual’s life can be better appreciated this way. Any candidates for such a testimonial should be carefully chosen and should have a variety of positive and negative experiences to share. As well, their pathway should be long enough that a clear development can be seen (this example stretched over 7 years). The volunteer will surely enjoy the status and attention s/he receives, but it is important that the prep team makes sure that an individual does not become “overused”.
