Toolbox of activities for a training focused on graphic design facilitation
To provide trainers with new techniques and methods for a training focused on graphic design facilitation.
This toolbox was created as part of the Erasmus+ training course “VISUALIZE: Tools and Techniques to Share Ideas, Overcome Language Barriers & Foster Collaboration,” a project designed to strengthen the use of visual communication in youth work and non-formal education.
The toolbox gathers practical activities experienced, adapted, and documented during the training. They include creative icebreakers, drawing and observation exercises, collaborative visualisation, communication games, visual templates, storyboarding, and the creation of thematic card decks. Each activity provides its aim, required materials, instructions, estimated duration, and, where relevant, reflection questions or facilitation tips.
Activities such as Visual Speed Dating, Creative Name Tag, Portraits, and Shared Symbols support group-building and creative confidence. What Works? develops observation and critical thinking through the analysis of visual communication in public spaces. Sketch & Guess explores listening and verbal precision, while Visual Templates and Storyboarding help participants represent processes, challenges, goals, and stories. The visual card activity shows how symbols can support communication around education, psychology, travel, Erasmus+, and youth work when words alone are not sufficient.
The activities are adaptable for different ages, group sizes, learning needs, and levels of drawing experience. They can be used during youth exchanges, training courses, school workshops, community meetings, team-building sessions, project planning, or work with multilingual groups and people who benefit from more visual forms of communication.
At its core, the toolbox emphasises that everyone can communicate visually. The objective is not artistic perfection, but clarity, participation, creativity, and shared understanding. This collection provides youth workers and educators with reusable methods that can make learning more interactive, reduce language barriers, encourage collaboration, and create space for participants who may find purely verbal communication difficult.
