The document was created as part of the UpGameIn project and presents Odd Statue Games’s methodology and best practices for designing educational games focused on environmental awareness and circular economy.
The main aims of the tool (i.e., the game-based methodology and library of practices) are:
To raise awareness about environmental issues such as climate change, biodiversity, and sustainability
To promote circular economy principles (e.g., recycling, waste reduction, resource management)
To encourage behavioral change through engagement and reflection
To empower learners and communities to take action in real life
To develop key skills, including:
Critical thinking
Collaboration
Creativity
Systems thinking
To support inclusive and accessible learning across diverse target groups
Odd Statue Games, is deeply committed to the transformative power of games. While environmental awareness and circular economy have not been central pillars of their earlier work, through their participation in the UpGameIn project, they have come to appreciate their importance and the role our games can play in promoting these values. This document outlines our current practices, reflections, and future intentions for integrating environmental and circular economy principles into their game design methodology.

Materials needed:
Odd Statue Games embraces both:
Physical production for the tactile, immersive experience.
Print-and-play digital formats, allowing wider accessibility and reducing packaging and shipping-related emissions.
Circular Economy Themes and Messaging in Games
They have not yet incorporated circular economy themes in gameplay but are now planning to:
Develop mechanics that reflect reuse, modularity, and sustainable resource loops.
Introduce storylines that reward behaviors aligned with circular principles.
Testing and Evaluation
Currently, they do not conduct formal lifecycle analyses or carbon footprint assessments. Inspired by UpGameIn, they plan to:
Start tracking their materials and production choices with sustainability in mind.
Incorporate sustainability impact checkpoints in their game development roadmap.
End-of-Life and Reusability
While they do not currently provide reuse or repurposing instructions, they:
Design expansions that revive and extend the life of our core products.
Encourage long-term replayability by focusing on meaningful and non-disposable gameplay experiences.
Future plans include offering repurposing guides and designing games with modular parts for easy reconfiguration and reuse.
