Exercise, Group Building Activity
An interactive 60-minute workshop for scout volunteers to identify motivations and benefits. Uses a "Compass" worksheet for personal goal-setting, focusing on leadership, growth, and creating a visible commitment to the organization.
The primary aim of this tool is to strengthen the commitment and retention of adult volunteers in scouting by helping them reconnect with their "why."
Specifically, the workshop goals are:
Self-Awareness: To help participants identify and articulate their personal motivations for volunteering.
Recognition of Benefits: To highlight the diverse range of personal and professional rewards—both abstract (like leadership and personal growth) and practical (like networking and outdoor skills)—that come with scouting.
Action Planning: To provide a structured framework for participants to define a clear, personal intention and commitment for their future involvement in the organization.
Sustainability: To help volunteers understand how to preserve their energy and enthusiasm for long-term service.
"TO BE or NOT TO BE A VOLUNTEER IN SCOUTING" is a structured, interactive 60-minute workshop designed to revitalize the engagement of adult volunteers within local scouting organizations. In the demanding environment of youth work, volunteers often face burnout or lose sight of their initial purpose; this tool provides a dedicated space for reflection, peer sharing, and strategic planning.
The workshop utilizes Non-Formal Education (NFE) methods, moving through a logical flow of self-discovery. It begins with physical movement (the Motivation Circle) to build group cohesion, transitions into cognitive reflection (Brainstorming and Benefits Mapping), and concludes with a tangible, creative output (The Personal Compass Plan).
By shifting the focus from the "obligations" of volunteering to the "personal gains" and "values," the tool transforms a routine service into a meaningful journey of personal development.
The highlight of the tool is the "My Visible Commitment" Compass, which acts as a bridge between abstract motivation and concrete action. It requires participants to look in four directions: their objectives, their support network, their areas for exploration, and the unique values they bring to the table.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Identify & Articulate Personal Motivation: Gain clarity on the specific internal drivers (values, joy, enthusiasm) that led them to volunteer and understand what sustains their energy.
Evaluate Personal & Professional Benefits: Categorize the diverse gains from scouting, recognizing how their service contributes to their own leadership skills, personal growth, networking opportunities, and outdoor expertise.
Develop Strategic Commitment: Formulate a concrete, actionable plan for their next phase of involvement, identifying specific activities they want to lead and new skills they wish to explore.
Assess Resource & Support Networks: Identify the specific people and organizational structures they need to lean on to achieve their goals, fostering a culture of mutual support.
Enhance Self-Reflection: Develop the habit of "de-roling" and reflecting on their volunteer experience to prevent burnout and ensure long-term sustainability in their roles.
