The Laberinto Migrante is a board game that shows the long journey that migrant people have to travel to reach a new country and start a life.

Aims of the tool

* To raise awareness about the difficulties that people face when migrating to a new country in search for a better life.
* To fight against racism and xenophobia by putting people in the shoes of migrants and experiencing their journey.

Description of the tool

The game shows the economical, bureaucratic and social difficulties that migrant people face throughout this long process.
Steps
First, you should start by having a conversation with the youth to explain to them that they are going to play a game that could affect them emotionally. You may want to agree on some characteristics for a safe space with the whole group.
Then, you can ask them what the word “migration” means to them. Have them share a few ideas before playing the game together.
After the beginning reflection, have the players sit down at a table either with the game board in front of them or a computer/table to access the digital version. Each player should choose a game piece and place it at the beginning of the board. Whoever rolls the highest number on the dice goes first.
Players gradually move through the game board according to the number they roll on the dice and the instructions in each square. They should read the texts on each square they land on out loud for the others to hear.
The first player who makes it to the centre of the game board wins.
Depending on the group and how long it took them to play, the facilitator can finish the game when the first player reaches the centre, or allow the rest of the players to continue playing until they reach the centre as well.
Finish the activity with a debriefing session of approximately 10 minutes, ensuring that all players can share their experience and discuss what they learned.

This tool is for

Target group: Youth Number of participants: Maximum of 6 participants (for the online version, possibly more if you print it out) + 1 youth worker/social educator to facilitate the activity. Recommendations Since this game could trigger emotional reactions, it’s a good idea to establish a safe space at the beginning. Also make sure the players are in a physical space that is comfortable and calm, with minimal noise and distractions. If there are youth of migrant origin in the group, be sure to check in with them and provide support if needed, because this game could be triggering for them. Make sure to allow ample time for debriefing and reflecting at the end of the game (at least 10 minutes) and allow all voices to be heard. During the debriefing, you can also encourage the youth to brainstorm ways that they could help migrant people in their communities and raise awareness of the importance of inclusion. Depending on the group and community you work in, this game could lead to further activities or events that could give the youth opportunities to expand their learning and speak to migrants in their community or people who work to support them. Debriefing The debriefing questions have already been added to the digitalised version in the part that says “para reflexionar”, but if you choose to print out the game, these are the questions: What conclusions do you draw about the migration process? How did you feel? Did it change your view of the migration process? What is the greatest difficulty you have encountered in the process? What can you do to improve the situation?
