The MindFit Training Programme includes 16 practical workshops of 20–30 minutes designed to be integrated into sports training sessions. It equips trainers and coaches with tools to act as first responders in supporting young athletes’ mental well-being.

Aims of the tool

To improve the mental well-being of young athletes by equipping trainers and coaches with practical tools and structured workshops that promote resilience, emotional awareness, stress management, positive communication, and early mental health support within sports organisations.

Description of the tool

The MindFit Training Programme is a practical and easy-to-implement educational resource designed to promote mental well-being among young athletes aged 14–18. Developed within the Erasmus+ Sport project MindFit: Tackle Your Thoughts, the programme consists of 16 structured workshops, each lasting approximately 20–30 minutes, which can be integrated into the beginning or end of regular sports training sessions.

The programme is based on the idea that coaches and trainers are often the first adults to notice signs of emotional distress, anxiety, low self-confidence, burnout, or other mental health challenges among athletes. For this reason, MindFit equips trainers with practical activities, reflection exercises, discussion prompts, and guidance materials that enable them to provide initial support and foster a positive team culture.

The workshops combine short theoretical inputs with experiential learning activities, group discussions, self-reflection exercises, and real-life scenarios. Topics include emotional awareness, resilience, stress management, self-confidence, communication, motivation, healthy coping strategies, psychological safety, and seeking support when needed. The programme is designed to complement existing sports activities rather than replace them, making mental well-being a natural part of athlete development.

By integrating mental health promotion into everyday sporting environments, MindFit helps sports organisations create safer, more inclusive, and more supportive spaces where young people can thrive both personally and athletically. The programme can be implemented by sports clubs, youth organisations, schools, and other institutions working with young athletes.
