Exercise
Participants are invited to draw their own ‘youth work mandala’ (or can be provided blank mandalas for those who do not want to draw) putting there their contribution and aims. Each contribution and aim is linked to one ‘element’ of a mandala.
Amelioration of youth work, self-awareness as a youth worker
Participants are invited to draw their own ‘youth work mandala’ (or can be provided blank mandalas for those who do not want to draw) putting there their own contribution and aims. Each contribution and aim is linked to one ‘element’ of a mandala. The size of each element should be proportionate to the importance of that particular contribution and aim in youth work: the more important the contribution and aim, the bigger the element should be. The participants should briefly name and describe their youth work contribution and aim. They should only draw the outlines of the
mandala and its elements - without colouring in the spaces. Keywords associated with their
contributions andaims can then be written into those spaces. Trainers will give a quick example of how a ‘mandala of youth workers’ could look on the flipchart. . Guideline instructions are- to ask the participants to identify what they are interested in youth work, their work expectations: what do they want to gain from the young people? What do you want to give to the young people? What do they want to happen to youth field? What do they need to make them feel comfortable in youth work?
Participants are made aware that they are at the centre of their mandala surrounded by different elements. When the work is done, participants are invited to share the most important moments of their work in small groups of 3 people in each. Debriefing is followed with the questions- .How was it for you (feelings, first impressions, thoughts, surprises...)?
· Are you happy with the result, with your own mandala?
· Which obstacles did you come across (finding your contributions and aims...)?
· How did you overcome these obstacles?
· What challenges and questions do you still see?
· Was this exercise useful to gain a deeper understanding of your own role as a youth worker?
· Do you have anything you want to add?
