The GREEN LEADERS E-Learning Toolkit (https://greenleaders.acdcromania.ro/) aims to equip young people, aspiring entrepreneurs, trainers, mentors and other learners with the knowledge, skills and practical tools needed to develop sustainable and socially responsible businesses. It supports participants in understanding the principles of social and green entrepreneurship, identifying community and environmental needs, generating viable business ideas, defining products and services, analysing markets, developing marketing and sales strategies, understanding financing options, assessing opportunities and risks, and preparing implementation and business plans.
The toolkit also aims to strengthen entrepreneurial thinking, creativity, leadership, digital competences and problem-solving skills while promoting social inclusion, work integration and equal participation of people with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups. Through a combination of self-paced learning, group activities, multimedia resources, reflection exercises and practical tasks, learners are encouraged to apply the acquired knowledge directly to real-life entrepreneurial contexts.
A further aim is to provide youth workers, trainers and organisations with a flexible and transferable educational resource that can be adapted to different learning environments and target groups, supporting the long-term development of inclusive green social entrepreneurship across Europe.
The GREEN LEADERS E-Learning Toolkit is an interactive Moodle-based training resource developed to strengthen green social entrepreneurship competences among young people, aspiring entrepreneurs, trainers, mentors and other learners, with particular attention to people with disabilities and people from disadvantaged or vulnerable backgrounds. The course combines knowledge about social entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, inclusion and business development with practical learning activities designed to help participants transform social or environmental challenges into realistic entrepreneurial initiatives. The overall approach is based on the idea that sustainable entrepreneurship should create economic value while also generating positive social and environmental impact.
The toolkit follows a structured learning pathway that guides participants step by step from understanding the basic concepts of social enterprise to developing their own business plan. The course includes an introduction and eight main learning modules covering: Introduction to Social Entrepreneurship; The Idea; The Service/Product; Market Overview; Marketing and Sales; Opportunities and Risks; Financing; Implementation Planning; and Business Planning. The learning pathway concludes with a course evaluation and a final exam. This structure enables learners to progressively develop an entrepreneurial concept while acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to assess its social relevance, environmental contribution, market potential and financial sustainability.
The learning methodology combines self-paced digital learning with activities that can be facilitated by trainers in group settings. The Moodle environment includes theoretical content, videos, interactive resources, reflection exercises, brainstorming activities, case-based learning, discussions and practical assignments. Many activities are specifically designed in two formats: a group version that can be delivered by a trainer and an alternative version that can be completed independently by individual learners. For example, participants can explore the concepts of “social”, “enterprise” and “entrepreneur” through collaborative word-cloud activities or through an individual research and word-association exercise. This makes the toolkit flexible enough to be used in youth work, VET, entrepreneurship education, workshops, blended-learning programmes or independent learning.
The course places strong emphasis on understanding what makes a social enterprise different from a traditional business. Participants explore the relationship between social impact, entrepreneurial activity and responsible governance, as well as the need to balance economic sustainability with social and environmental objectives. The toolkit also introduces learners to the practical foundations of a sustainable social enterprise, including the development of a clear business idea, market analysis, appropriate organisational structures, financial sustainability, work organisation, access to advice and the importance of networking. Learners are encouraged to think critically about how their ideas respond to real community needs and how they can create sustainable value over time.
A key dimension of the GREEN LEADERS Toolkit is inclusion. The course explores social inclusion, social integration, social cohesion and work integration as important elements of social entrepreneurship. Learners are encouraged to reflect on the needs of their own communities and to consider how social enterprises can create opportunities for people who experience barriers to employment or participation, including people with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups. Practical questions such as “What could a social enterprise do for you and your community?” help participants connect the learning content with their own environment, experience and entrepreneurial ambitions.
The toolkit also connects entrepreneurship with the European green transition. Participants learn about social enterprises in the European context, the European Green Deal, circular economy approaches, sustainable finance, green SMEs and start-ups, green jobs and emerging opportunities in environmentally sustainable sectors. This European perspective helps learners understand that green social entrepreneurship is not only about starting a business, but also about contributing to broader social, economic and environmental transformation.
Throughout the learning process, participants are encouraged to move from theory to practice. They identify needs and opportunities, develop a business idea, define a product or service, analyse their target market, consider marketing and sales strategies, identify risks, explore financing options and prepare an implementation and business plan. The toolkit therefore functions both as an educational course and as a practical pathway for developing an initial green social enterprise concept.
The GREEN LEADERS platform was designed as a sustainable and transferable educational resource that can continue to be used beyond the lifetime of the project. Its methodology and materials can be adapted by youth organisations, VET providers, NGOs, trainers, mentors and other organisations interested in green entrepreneurship, social innovation and inclusive learning. Continuous online access allows learners to revisit resources, work at their own pace and combine digital learning with mentoring or face-to-face activities. The course methodology explicitly promotes the transfer and adaptation of its educational resources to other organisations and learning contexts.

Materials needed:
An internet-connected computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone with access to the GREEN LEADERS Moodle platform is recommended. For group-based training, a projector or shared screen can be useful, together with paper, pens, markers, flipchart/blackboard materials and, where relevant, digital tools such as Mentimeter. Many activities can also be adapted for low-tech delivery using only paper-based materials.
Duration:
The GREEN LEADERS Toolkit is designed for flexible delivery, allowing both self-paced individual learning and trainer-led group sessions through the Moodle platform. The course follows a progressive learning pathway from the fundamentals of social entrepreneurship to the development of a complete business plan, using theoretical content, videos, practical exercises, reflection activities, group work and assessments.
For project piloting, the training was designed as a 3-day programme, with participants working through the digital content while receiving support from trained Green Leaders and trainers.
The toolkit can also be used in a blended-learning format, combining Moodle-based learning with webinars, workshops, mentoring, peer learning and face-to-face activities or study visits.
Therefore, there is no fixed duration for independent use; trainers may adapt the pace and select individual modules according to the needs, experience and learning objectives of the participants.
