Background Text, Manual
An awareness and practical guidance booklet helping young people recognise discrimination, racism, stereotypes, social exclusion and social anxiety, while developing confidence, empathy, inclusive behaviour and constructive ways to respond.
The booklet aims to raise young people’s awareness of discrimination, racism, stereotypes, prejudice, social exclusion, social barriers and fear of judgment, helping them recognise how these issues can affect themselves and others.
It also aims to move readers from awareness towards action by strengthening self-awareness, empathy, assertive communication, confidence and inclusive behaviour, while encouraging them to seek support, challenge harmful attitudes and contribute to safer and more inclusive communities.
From Awareness to Inclusion is an educational and awareness-raising resource developed within the Erasmus+ youth exchange Inclusion through the Power of Art. It is primarily designed for young people, but can also support youth workers, educators and organisations working on inclusion and youth participation.
The first part of the booklet helps readers recognise and better understand pressing social issues affecting young people, including discrimination, racism, stereotypes and prejudice, social exclusion, social barriers, social anxiety and fear of judgment. It also explores why young people may remain silent when facing these situations and how such experiences can influence confidence, wellbeing, participation and sense of belonging. The second part focuses on practical ways to respond. It introduces approaches for building self-awareness, challenging stereotypes, communicating assertively, responding to discrimination safely, using inclusive language, building confidence in social situations, seeking support and becoming an ally to others. It also encourages young people to contribute to more inclusive school, youth and community environments through small but meaningful everyday actions.
