A modular educational toolkit including lesson plans, a gamified app, and dietary protocols to promote physical activity and nutrition, aiming to prevent diabetes among children, adolescents, and university students.

Aims of the tool

To enhance health-related fitness knowledge, assist in achieving higher fitness levels, develop responsible health attitudes, and improve daily habits regarding nutrition, hydration, and sleep to counteract the onset of diabetes.

Description of the tool

DUSE educational toolkit freely available on the EPALE platform managed by the European Commission: https://epale.ec.europa.eu/en/resource-centre/content/duse-counteracting-diabetes-through-interdisciplinary-education
The tool uses a pedagogical framework grounded in experiential learning and constructivist principles to deliver age-tailored content. Key features include 28 physical education lesson plans for elementary students focused on fitness components like cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. For adolescents and families, it provides workshops on nutritional literacy, food diaries, and a protocol for high-risk children in clinical settings. Digital literacy is integrated through the creation of personalized health-tracking tools and the open-access Vitalia App. Learning outcomes include the ability to measure heart rate, set SMART goals, read food labels, and identify healthy lifestyle "pillars".
