Aims of the tool

The aim of the tool is to provide university students with a structured introduction to circular economy, helping them understand its principles, compare it with the linear economy, explore relevant policies and regulations, and apply circular strategies in areas such as waste, energy, water, transport, food, fashion, housing, communities and digital innovation. It also aims to develop critical thinking, problem-solving and practical skills through assignments, case studies, group work and real-world circular economy challenges.

Description of the tool

This learning tool provides a structured 12-week introduction to circular economy for bachelor-level learners. It combines theory, case studies, weekly assignments, group work and practical activities to help students understand how circular economy can respond to today’s environmental, economic and social challenges.

The course covers circular economy principles, the difference between linear and circular models, EU and global policy frameworks, waste management, energy and water efficiency, transport, food and water consumption, fashion, housing, community initiatives, digital innovation and future circular economy scenarios. Learners are encouraged to connect theory with real-life examples and develop practical circular solutions for local or sector-specific challenges.

Learning outcomes

After completing this learning tool, students will be able to:
- Explain the main principles, concepts and frameworks of circular economy.
- Distinguish circular economy from the traditional linear economic model.
- Analyse global and local environmental, social and economic challenges that make circular transition necessary.
- Understand key policies and regulations, including EU circular economy and sustainability frameworks.
