Be Your Own Media – A Practical Guide to Media Literacy and Youth-Led Podcasting

Aims of the tool
Be Your Own Media supports youth workers, trainers and youth leaders in developing young people’s media literacy, critical thinking, responsible communication and participation. The toolkit provides practical non-formal education activities, guidance for organising youth-led podcast processes, inclusion and evaluation recommendations, facilitator tips and a ready-to-use podcast checklist.
Description of the tool
Be Your Own Media is a practical toolkit developed within the Erasmus+ project S.P.A.C.E for Youth. It helps facilitators turn media literacy into an active learning and participation process.
The toolkit follows a simple learning pathway — Explore, Understand, Practise, Create and Reflect — and includes adaptable non-formal education activities on critical assessment of information, misinformation, media framing and responsible communication.
It also guides youth workers through the complete process of creating a youth-led podcast, from selecting a topic and researching information to recording, publication, accessibility and evaluation. Practical facilitator tips and lessons from local implementation in different European contexts are included throughout.
The resource can be used as a complete learning pathway or selectively according to the needs of the group, available time and local context.
