To break the ice and to get to know the names of participants at the beginning of a training course

Description of the tool

Put the chairs in a circle (close enough to each other) and ask the participants to stand on the chairs (with or without shoes depending on your arrangements with the cleaning staff). When on the chairs you ask the participants to move into alphabetical order according to first name WITHOUT touching the floor (it is a cooperation exercise). When done, you do a round of names to check if the order is correct and at the same time refresh all the names.
You could add a second round asking participants to rank according to birthday (shoe size, experience in the topic of the course, etc).

Comments

  • This is good and tested. We used it in Training for Trainers seminar at Seoul Korea in October 2003. I will use it in my workcamps here in the Philippines.

  • Be aware of this exercise if you have people with disabilities in your group. It is still possible to do it, if the people with diabilities wants to take such a challenge and to try it. Sometimes you are suprised how many abilities have people with disabilities. Of course, it will require more attention and more support from the group members.
In SALTO TC Inclusion Through Sports 2004 we had person in the wheel chair. So, instead of chairs we used sheets of paper on the ground. You can still call the exercise \"Alphabetical chair\" if you have at least one wheel chair.
