Aims & objectives

UNIQUE was a European network of 13 member organizations united for quality and innovation in the field of education. One of our main aims is to increase recognition (formal and social) of non-formal learning. As a part of recognition of non-formal learning, we see a great need for stronger cooperation between research and non-formal education practices.

The seminar aimed for increasing competence in combining non-formal education practice and research, to further assist the recognition and the improvement of quality in the field of non-formal education.

The objectives of the seminar were to:

- Explore methodologies of research in learning process and learning outcomes, which could potentially fit the principles and nature of Non-Formal Education,
- Develop critical thinking of practitioners towards various research methodologies,
Increase awareness of the added value provided by research towards the non-formal learning
- Explore cost effective ways to incorporate research with non formal learning processes,
- Provide space for discussing the usage of the applied research in the NFL processes

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

Seminar was targeted to:

Non-formal educators (Trainers, Educators, Youth Workers), and Researchers from the social, youth, and educational field, interested in combining non-formal learning learning and research - Coming from 10 countries within the UNIQUE network.

Training methods used & main activities

- Opening and exploring the concept of research and paradigms & connection with NFL
- Exploring & Learning research methodologies
- Creating specific proposals for research strategies/research desings within youth work and non-formal learning
- Reflection moment: findings of the day, feedback to organisers

Outcomes of the activity

- Strengthened cooperation between practice and research.
- Initiatives to combine research in the NFL practices

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

Planning, implementation and evaluation as a part of the trainers' / facilitators' team + logistical arrangements
