MIGRANT TOOLS Social work to promote intercultural dialogue

Aims & objectives

The aim of the training was to raise awareness on the daily growth of discriminations, xenophobia and racism among and towards young people coming from migrant families and consequently to enable them in preventing those actions and protecting other victims. In order to fulfil the above mentioned aim it’s fundamental to provide the peer educators and the youth workers (that support/cooperate with them) of new information on the above mentioned topics, to offer them new effective tools to contrast ignorance and prejudices and to make their work more deep-rooted, effective and enduring in each local background.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The group was composed by youth workers, peer educators, representatives of youth centres and volunteers active at local and international level, with past experience in voluntary work and that daily work/cooperate with young people coming from migrant families.
The participants countries of origins were: Greece, Portugal, Turkey, France, Belgium, Sweden and Italy.

Training methods used & main activities

During the project interactive methodologies based on the use of non formal education tools and ICT were proposed and developed in every workshop.
During the project, both the work and the exchange of technical knowledge was encouraged and promoted: trainers and participants shared tools and knowledge in an horizontal manner and the different approaches to the learning processes will stimulated.

Outcomes of the activity

Below the list of the following outcomes of the project:
Investigation of the common prejudices and stereotypes toward the other cultures; analysis of the key concepts related with migration and discrimination; presentation of local actions and projects already implemented by youth organization and Ngo to struggle against discriminative behaves based on/or caused by racist intentions and of the tools used; sharing of methodologies and new approaches based on ICT that can be used to prevent and struggle against racism in youth world; creation of 4 campaigns against racism and discrimination.

I worked on this training for 7 days as a full time trainer.
