Aims & objectives

The training aimed to promote intercultural dialogue, community participation, and digital inclusion using the framework of the Council of Europe's Competences for Democratic Culture. It addressed the need for adult educators and community leaders to develop facilitation skills and inclusive methods that empower marginalised voices and support democratic engagement. The training aligned with the organisation’s mission to foster social cohesion and lifelong learning.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The training brought together participants from several European countries, including educators, community workers, and adult learners from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Special attention was given to including migrants and underrepresented groups. This multicultural group created a rich, authentic space for exploring issues of identity, participation, and diversity.

Training methods used & main activities

The training used a variety of non-formal methods including open-circle dialogues, symbolic object sharing, experiential learning sequences, simulations, music and visual metaphors, storytelling, and blended evaluation tools (e.g. Padlet boards, self-assessment grids, focus-group dialogues). Activities encouraged reflection on lived experiences, personal narratives, and collaborative learning.

Outcomes of the activity

The training achieved deep learner engagement and visible transformation. Participants developed intercultural competence, facilitation confidence, and practical tools for use in their own communities. The impact was reflected in high evaluation scores (average 4.8/5) and participant-led co-facilitation. Tobias also introduced improved evaluation practices now embedded in Metiva’s quality assurance systems. The activity contributed to long-term capacity building and community empowerment.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

I was responsible for co-designing and delivering the training programme in collaboration with the Metiva team. My role included creating a psychologically safe learning environment, leading experiential sessions on democratic competences, facilitating intercultural communication, and introducing innovative evaluation tools. I ensured the training adapted to the group’s evolving needs and promoted inclusive participation throughout.

I worked on this training for 6 days as a full time trainer.
