Europe: Crisis and Protest

The training activity took place
in Lisbon, Portungal
organised by Bochumer Bildungschance e.V.
31.10-04.11.2013

Aims & objectives

The training took place in the middle of the economic crisis that hit so dramatically Europe,in particular southern European countries, in the past years and whose effects still affect nowadays, more or less directly, the whole continent.
The training wanted to explore the different situations that the youngsters were experiencing according to their country of residence and how the crisis was affecting youth work on both, national and international levels. Through the visits to different local realities and through the mutual understanding and sharing information, the training then addressed the topic of solidarity and possible ways to deal with the global problem.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The training saw the participation of 18 people coming from 5 countries of residence (Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain) but, some of them, were having different origins.
The participants were all involved in organisations and grass-root movements, working directly with youngsters in distress.

Training methods used & main activities

The training was focused on sharing information and experiences, so the methods were chosen accordingly.
After a first moment of getting to know each other and team-building, the training moved on and the participants shared information and experiences, in a safe environment facilitated by the team of trainers. The participants chose by themselves the tool to be used and the trainers adjusted to it, proposing activities to foster empathy among them but also for dealing with cultural differences and diverse perspectives. When the team considered the moment appropriate, role-plays were proposed and then the outcomes discussed. Brainstorming sessions were also planned and facilitated by the trainers.

Outcomes of the activity

According to the team opinion, the success of the training could be seen in the empathy and mutual understanding that raised among the participants. They were active participating in each phase of the training course, getting deeper on topics and planning common projects also during the informal moments. The participants are still in contact and created a network of organisations dealing with political, economic and civic issues.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

As a team, we planned the activities and facilitated the different sessions among the participants and also during the visits to the different grass-root realities present in Lisbon.
Facilitation, moderation and leading activities were the main tasks that I had a trainer.

I worked on this training for 4 days as a full time trainer.
