TOY - Trainers Online for Youth
http://trainers.salto-youth.net/MattiasBuysens/
As a trainer I create spaces for participants to feel safer, and create opportunities to grow as a human being. Topics that are close to my heart are intercultural learning, Mental Wellbeing, Sustainability on all its different levels, groupdynamics and civic engagement.
I love to work in an experiential way in which Nature takes an important place. Working with the interconnectedness within the group, and stimulate the feeling of belonging here and now is one of the key aspects I work from.
Mattias Buysens has 3 references for past work as a trainer.
Freelance trainer
For me it all started as animator on a playground somewhere in west flanders, Belgium. I did this for 7 years, and was lucky to work my first job here as support person for the volunteers.
From then on I knew I wanted to work with young people, groups in a supportive coaching way.
Throughout the years I worked as:
- Coördinator of playground and afterschool care (few months 2009-2010)
- Day care worker with refugees (few months 2010)
- Groupworker/facilitator for youth (13-18y) on groupdynamics, relationships, wellbeing, sexuality, their future, meaning of 'life', .. mainly based on Experiential learning. The last 1,5 years I also was a mentor for some of my colleagues.
- youth worker for Beroepenhuis. A place where students of elementary school (11-12 year), could come for half a day to get to know different professions by trying them out.
- Educational worker for a small NGO. Supporting a youth organisation that organizes intercultural exchanges between Belgium and Senegal/Burkina Faso for youth between 16 and 18 years old + working on the topic of substainable farming.
- Coördinator of Kiemkracht. A small festival on substainability of labo vzw. An organisation focussing on critical citizenship (P. Freire, G. Boal, J. Macy, ..) (few months 2017)
- Volunteers Coördinator Climate Express. Working as only payed worker in this climate citizenmovement supporting volunteers and the actions organised by us ( Climate March of 100.000 people and Human chain around government buildings in Brussels).
- Lecturer/teacher in higher education (Graduate Social works). The direction I teach in is mainly for students who prefer to learn by doing, instead of sitting behind their desk. We have 2 days of class, and 3 days of internship. I give two courses and support (and evaluate) students during their internship. (From 09/2020 untill 09/2023 )
In the main time I was/am working as freelance trainer:
- Jint vzw (NA BE-FL). Working on online project during covid: WhatsUp as support/coach for Europeers developping this tool. Afterwards as trainer for NA-Fl to prepare and facilitate this online moments developped to support volunteers during the covid period and making sure they still feel connected with others. This sessions also took place in different city's when the lock down was over to reconnect volunteers after this difficult period.
- Freelance trainer/developper of KA2 programme Belonging to Nature: The heart of wellbeing.
During all these years their was also a lot voluntary work done for:
- Don Bosco in international projects as groupleader to Zambia (2 times) and India (1 time), and in giving an animator course to zambian youthworkers.
- Time-out projects for youth. Hikes of 5 days within Belgium as time out for boys.
- Working on campaigns to mobilize people for Climate actions: 10.000 Belgians to Paris and bicycle tour for 360 people from Brussels to Bonn ( coördinator)
- ....
All the above experiences are important to me to mention, because they brought me to where I am now. And to the topics that are important to me at this point of my life: Wellbeing, Substainability, Coaching, (System) Change, Personal Growth, Diversity, intercultural learning and community building.
These topics I focus on in my work as trainer/facilitator.
- Experience in non-formal learning as facilitator of groups by using experiental learning. Here I was introduced to non-formal learning, coaching and mentoring skills, active reviewing, .. And got the chance to learn a lot by doing, failing, trying again.
So a lot of non-formal learning for me while giving these trainings. I also got to experience that learning always goes in two direction.
- Participating in TOT 2019-2020.
This extended training experience came a year after my burn out and re-awoke the fire burning inside of me to work with groups as facilitator of learning processes. I got back in teach with my own capacities and got to see the importance of non-formal, but also informal learning. And especially the lack of the informal learning during covid. It made me realize the importance of it, and made me think how I can pay more attention to this kind of learning in my work.
Besides it was a great way of learning and getting to know other trainers. From this the KA2 project arised on the connection between nature connection and Wellbeing. During this project (Belonging to Nature, the heart of wellbeing) my learning continued. This on working on European projects and giving 2 european trainings.
During this proces I learned a lot on my needs as co-trainer and partner within a project.
- in 2017 I decided to start a teachersstudy. This because I believe in the potential of schools, but not in how we teach our youth at this moment within schools. I have always felt an ambiguity towards schools because of this reason. At the end of this study I still feld this ambiguity.
For the moment I work with students who want to become social workers. This because I believe I can introduce some non-formal learning within this programme. Here I support and coach individual students for their internship during the first year of their study. I also give a year course about getting to know themselfes better as future social workers (basic attitude, beliefs, growth, ..)
For me here the importance of support is very visible in relation to these students. A lot of them are facing different vulnerabilities. Seeing them grow by giving them space to share, fail, learn and to acknowledge to see their efforts is so important. A student, but any person, is more then your first impression.
Besides these their have been a lot of personal learning during formal, non formal and informal moments. These all made me to who I am and made me see that real change takes time, courage and strenght. This change happens in a more sustainable way when you have people around you supporting and trusting you.
