Info session
Lithuania has abundant water resources but faces pollution challenges and is improving water quality through better treatment, greener farming, and public education.
The aim is to explain Lithuania’s current water pollution situation, identify the main sources and challenges, and highlight the practices and policies used to protect water resources. It seeks to raise awareness about pollution, encourage sustainable behavior, and show how Lithuania is working to improve water quality for people, nature, and the future.
Lithuania has rich water resources, but water pollution remains a challenge. Around 30% of surface waters have poor quality, mainly because of agricultural runoff containing nitrogen and phosphorus. Urban and industrial areas also contribute to pollution, while climate change increases pressure on water systems. Lithuania is addressing these issues through better wastewater treatment, ecological farming, public drinking water stations, and environmental education.
