Description of the tool

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a widespread issue across Europe, affecting millions every year. Combating it requires collective action, yet men feel often unsure of how to contribute or intervene safely.

The ManUp4Her project addresses this by providing educational videos that raise awareness, stimulate discussion, and equip viewers with practical bystander intervention strategies. These resources create a space for reflection, empowering everyone to recognise, respond to, and prevent GBV in everyday life.

Led by Jugend- & Kulturprojekt e.V., the project produced six videos designed to promote critical thinking and active engagement. Following Cynthia Brame’s learning design principles, the videos use signalling (highlighting key information), segmenting (breaking content into manageable sections), and interactive pauses (posing reflective questions) to enhance understanding and retention.

Viewers are encouraged to actively engage: analyzing realistic scenarios, reflecting on their own behaviors, and discussing practical ways to intervene. The videos cover situations across three main environments (workplaces, public spaces, and homes) highlighting both early warning signs and practical strategies:

- Recognising GBV at Work – Highlights subtle forms such as inappropriate comments or invasions of personal space and underscores the importance of safe organizational policies.

- Preventing GBV at Work – Demonstrates how colleagues and HR can create respectful, inclusive workplaces.

- Recognising GBV in Public – Shows street harassment and its emotional impact, introducing tools like the “Signal for Help.”

- Preventing GBV in Public – Demonstrates safe bystander intervention using Hollaback’s “5Ds of Bystander Intervention.”

- Recognising GBV at Home – Highlights harmful behaviors such as psychological abuse and financial control, focusing on early warning signs.

- Preventing GBV at Home – Presents positive examples of empathy, active listening, and open communication to foster safe, respectful relationships.

These videos provide practical knowledge, spark meaningful discussions, and equip viewers with the skills to recognise harmful behaviours, intervene safely, and contribute to a culture of zero tolerance toward GBV. By engaging with the resources, everyone can become an active ally in promoting and discussing gender equality.
