It method guides youth to create films promoting democracy and active citizenship through workshops, filming, screenings, and sharing. It’s reusable with plans, guides, consent forms, and facilitation tips.

Aims of the tool

Increase awareness and understanding of democratic principles and practices among young people.
Empower young participants to actively engage in democratic processes and decision-making.
Enhance the media literacy skills, critical thinking, and digital storytelling abilities of the participants.
Foster cross-cultural understanding and collaboration among participants from different countries.
Produce impactful films that raise awareness about democratic participation and inspire action.

Description of the tool

This method uses participatory filmmaking to help young people explore and express democratic values through the creation of short films. It integrates civic learning with hands-on digital storytelling to encourage active involvement, creative expression, and group reflection.

The process includes five key phases:

Preparation – Participant selection, introduction to democratic concepts, and basic filmmaking training.
Ideation & Scripting – Supporting youth in choosing themes and developing scripts.
Filmmaking – Workshops on filming, sound, and editing; participants shoot and assemble their films.
Screening & Discussion – Public sharing of the films, followed by guided reflection.
Evaluation & Reuse – Collecting feedback and documenting the process so it can be applied again.

The main outputs of this method are the youth-created short films, produced through the participatory filmmaking process. Each film reflects a unique exploration of democratic values, collaboration, and storytelling. The attached videos and descriptions include:
A Matter of Time – A story about personal memories, ownership, and legacy, explored through a symbolic watch.

Making of / Off – A behind-the-scenes glimpse into the filmmaking process, showing collaboration, improvisation, and group dynamics.

The Red Nose – Version 1 – A touching story between a volunteer and a young girl, exploring empathy, care, and emotional resilience.

The Red Nose – Version 2 – An alternative edit of the same story with small narrative and emotional variations.

Documentation and Materials:
The following materials are provided to demonstrate the process and its outcomes:

Youth-produced films (four videos), each with a written description summarizing its theme and storyline.

Basic notes and descriptions included in the attached document, showing the context in which the films were made.

Consent and participation elements, used during filming (as part of the project’s workflow, not provided as separate files).
