The aim is to promote inclusive apprenticeship programs for deaf individuals within the European workforce, focusing on creating accessible environments through training, mentorship, and reasonable accommodations, while challenging stereotypes regarding their employability.
This article outlines the critical need for disability inclusion in European workplaces, focusing on the inclusion of deaf and hard of hearing individuals. It discusses the current state of disability employment in the EU, highlighting barriers such as underemployment, social exclusion, and lack of training. The article presents various training and awareness initiatives, including disability awareness programs, sign language courses, and reasonable workplace accommodations that companies are adopting to ensure inclusivity. The piece also highlights several good practices in European companies, including the Erasmus+ DESIGNS project and the Adecco Group’s strategies for inclusive workplaces. The QSA4Disability project is featured as an important initiative aimed at improving the employment prospects of deaf apprentices through a quality standard for distance apprenticeships in Vocational Education and Training (VET).
