Practical toolkit on organising Human Library events, with step-by-step guidance, trauma-sensitive tips and adaptable activities for schools, libraries and wider communities.

Aims of the tool

The toolkit aims to help educators, youth workers and community organisers design and run meaningful Human Library events that challenge stereotypes, foster empathy, support inclusion and ensure a safe, respectful space for dialogue.

Description of the tool

This toolkit presents the Human Library as a practical method for learning through real stories. It explains what a Human Library is, how the method grew internationally, and offers step by step guidance on planning and running events. Readers find concrete advice on defining the focus of the event, recruiting and preparing human books, organising readers, choosing a safe and accessible venue and creating clear structures for sessions, feedback and follow up. A separate part focuses on emotional safety, trauma informed practice, anxiety and consent, so organisers can protect the wellbeing of everyone involved. The toolkit also includes ready to use non formal activities that explore stereotypes, diversity, equality and equity, as well as real participant reflections and personal stories.

Using this tool, learners can develop several outcomes. They gain a clear understanding of the Human Library concept and its educational potential. They strengthen skills in planning and facilitating dialogue based events, including setting ground rules and managing group dynamics. They improve their ability to recognise and address stereotypes, discrimination and social exclusion in a reflective way. They deepen empathy and active listening skills through structured interaction with lived experiences. They also become more aware of emotional processes such as anxiety and can integrate basic wellbeing practices into their work with groups.
