A practical toolkit that helps youth workers use game-based learning and gamification to engage young people in climate action, sustainability, and environmental awareness through interactive games, reflection, and non-formal education.

Aims of the tool

Equip youth workers with practical gamification and game-based learning methods for environmental education.
Increase young people's awareness of climate change, sustainability, and biodiversity.
Support the design of engaging educational activities that inspire environmental action.
Encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and the ability to imagine sustainable futures.

Description of the tool

The Green Playground Toolkit is a practical resource for youth workers, educators, and facilitators who want to use games as a tool for environmental learning. Developed as part of the Erasmus+ Green Playground training course, the toolkit introduces the principles of game-based learning and gamification and demonstrates how they can be applied to climate change, sustainability, and environmental action.

The toolkit includes:

An introduction to game-based learning, gamification, and player motivation.
Guidance on designing meaningful learning experiences.
Activities that help participants reflect on present environmental challenges and imagine positive, sustainable futures.
A collection of tested educational games, board games, facilitation tips, and complementary reflection activities.

Learning outcomes
After completing this toolkit, participants will be able to:

Understand the principles of game-based learning and gamification.
Design engaging environmental education activities using game mechanics.
Select methods that motivate different types of learners.
Facilitate games that promote critical thinking, collaboration, and reflection.
