A practical guide for youth workers on supporting young people through crises & disasters. Covers trauma-informed practice, resilience-building, crisis response, inclusion of marginalised youth & self-care. Erasmus+ ResCom project (Cyprus/Greece)

Aims of the tool

The Guide for Youth Workers aims to bridge the gap between theory and frontline practice in crisis and disaster contexts, specifically for youth workers and volunteers who work directly with young people. More specifically it aims to:

Equip youth workers with practical, actionable tools and techniques to support young people before, during and after crises and disasters, complementing the broader RCDM Manual
Provide guidance on trauma-informed youth work, focusing on safety, trust and empowerment in direct interactions with young people
Support youth workers in maintaining professional boundaries, preventing burnout and sustaining their own wellbeing while working in emotionally demanding crisis contexts
Develop cultural sensitivity and inclusive practices, enabling youth workers to effectively support diverse groups including refugees, migrants, Roma, LGBTQIA+ youth and young people with disabilities
Position youth workers as agents of recovery and community resilience, empowering them to advocate for young people and bridge gaps between institutional systems and communities
Offer accessible, usable guidance written in plain language with practical examples, conversation starters and checklists, suitable for youth workers with varying levels of formal training or experience

The guide was developed as a companion to the RCDM Manual, intentionally narrowing its focus to the specific responsibilities and challenges of youth workers, making the manual's broader content immediately applicable in real-world settings such as schools, community centres and informal youth spaces.

Description of the tool

The ResCom Guide for Youth Workers is a practical, field-oriented companion to the Risk, Crisis & Disaster Management (RCDM) Manual, developed under the Erasmus+ ResCom project (2023-3-CY02-KA210-YOU-000176655), a small-scale partnership between The Serendipitous Black Cloud Ltd (Cyprus) and Poreia Ygeias sce (Greece). While the RCDM Manual provides the theoretical and strategic foundation, this guide translates those concepts into actionable, youth-centred practice for youth workers, volunteers and professionals working directly with young people in crisis and disaster contexts.
The guide is written in clear, accessible language, includes practical examples, conversation starters, checklists, and coping techniques, and is suitable for youth workers with varying levels of formal training or experience. It is designed to be flexible and non-linear, allowing readers to navigate directly to the sections most relevant to their current situation or context. It is available in both English and Greek.
The guide is grounded in a systemic approach, drawing on systemic psychotherapy, trauma-informed practice, and narrative therapy frameworks. It was informed by field research, including focus groups and discussions with young people and youth workers in Cyprus and Greece, and includes real youth narratives from both countries.
The guide covers 9 sections:
Section 1 Introduction: why this guide, the role of youth workers in crisis contexts, trauma-informed practices, building resilience, comprehensive support systems and how this guide complements the RCDM Manual
Section 2 Understanding Crises and Their Impact on Youth: types of disasters and crises, emotional and psychological effects, eco-grief and environmental loss, youth narratives from Cyprus and Greece, marginalized youth and specific vulnerabilities
Section 3 The Youth Worker in Crisis Contexts: from supporter to stabilizer, dual roles (being affected while supporting others), boundaries, burnout and self-care, cultural sensitivity and inclusive practices
Section 4 Trauma-Informed Practice: what it is, principles of safety, trust and empowerment, avoiding re-traumatization, recognizing signs of distress and when to refer
Section 5 Building Resilience in Youth: what resilience means for young people and how youth workers can actively support its development
Section 6 Practical Tools and Techniques: conversation starters and safe sharing techniques, psychoeducation on emotions and stress, coping techniques (grounding, breathing, reflection), storytelling and narrative work, strength-based feedback and reframing
Section 7 Working with Specific Groups: youth with disabilities or neurodivergence, youth with mental health conditions, migrant, refugee, Roma and LGBTQIA+ youth, language, literacy and cultural relevance
Section 8 Activity Design and Long-Term Recovery: preparing safe and inclusive activities, adjusting to crisis timing (during vs after), debriefing and integration practices, supporting long-term recovery, working with families, schools and communities
Section 9 Professional Boundaries and Collaboration: recognising the limits of your role, referral mapping and resource lists (including specific resources for Cyprus and Greece), building local collaboration, ethical considerations and confidentiality.
