The Compass is a practical tool for youth workers, educators and teachers, offering a competence framework and hands-on activities to create inclusive, engaging, and participatory non-formal learning experiences.

Aims of the tool

The Compass helps youth workers, trainers and teachers create inclusive and engaging non-formal learning experiences. It supports them in developing the competences needed to work with diverse groups, promote equality, and foster participation. Built on a multidisciplinary approach, the Compass offers activities, exercises, and guidance that draw on different methods and topics, making them adaptable to a wide range of contexts. It also gives special importance to gamification as a tool for inclusion and effective learning, making activities more multimodal, engaging and participatory. Beyond ready-to-use tools, the Compass aims at inspiring youth workers to experiment and create their own interactive methods, tailored to the needs and interests of their learners.

Description of the tool

Developed as part of the Erasmus+ project My Diversity, Our Strength (which aims to challenge gender stereotypes, more especially in STEM disciplines), the Compass combines a Competence Framework with a set of Educational Activities.

The first part, the Framework, was built from a survey conducted among young adults and youth workers from the partner countries. It identifies the key knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to foster engagement and inclusion in educational practices.

The second part presents activities created by the project partners. They follow a multidisciplinary approach, using different methods, organizational frameworks, materials, and formats to ensure adaptability and usability across a wide range of contexts (formal and non-formal). Each activity is linked to the competence framework through informative icons, highlighting which skills can be developed. The activities cover the following topics:
“Inclusivity and Diversity”: to focus on awareness and overcome gender and cultural stereotypes
“Group Management”: to develop leadership skills, address group dynamics, and clarify roles and responsibilities in collaborative settings
“Creativity and Innovation for Design - Best practice example”: to get examples of activities that demonstrate how non-formal education methods can enhance learning and boost participants’ motivation to engage.

Last but not least, the Compass provides tools for reflection and evaluation, including questionnaires designed to assess the impact of the activities on participants’ knowledge, skills, and perceptions (especially regarding gender stereotypes and the accessibility of STEM disciplines for boys and girls).

Designed for flexibility, it provides ready-to-use resources while also serving as a source of inspiration for youth workers and teachers who wish to create their own engaging and inclusive activities.
