Simulation Exercise, Exercise
"House of Learning" is an exercise that lets participants reflect on how they learn and shows that different people learn in different ways, using the multiple intelligence theory of Howard Gardner.
Aim: Learning about different learning styles and recognize your personal preferences.
Objectives:
- Learn about the seven dimensions of Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligence model, as an
e.g. of possible learning styles typology
- Get to know the existence of different learning styles
- Reflect on one’s personal preference / learning approach
- Learn to learn
1st the participants are invited to visit the house of learning. They get a small tour with the presentation of activities they will take place in the "different themes rooms" (in case you don´t have several rooms, you can make a floorplan of a house on the floor with masking tape). The participants have 45 minutes to discover and experiment the activities placed in each room. The rooms are divided by the following themes according to Gardner’s multiple intelligence typology:
• logical-mathematical
• spatial-visual
• intrapersonal
• musical
• bodily-kinetic
• linguistic
• extra-personal
The participants can freely discover the rooms, as long as they take in account that others have to experiment themselves all kind of activities.
After this period, the participants are invited to participate in an auction. Each room will be on sale separately, starting from a fixed amount (all the rooms start from the same amount). People should offer more money for the rooms that they identify themselves more. The amount available for each participant is 1000 euros maximum. Before the auction starts, give the participants some time to reflect on which rooms they really liked and decide how much they want to spend on each room. After this auction starts and each room will be sold by auction. The highest bidder wins the room.
