Herstory explores untold narratives of women in football, using historical inquiry and creative storytelling to foster inclusion and challenge stereotypes. With this tool learners reflect on gender roles in sports and society.

Aims of the tool

-to introduce learners to collection of events in the history of women’s football in Europe and the world
-to challenge the learners to assess order of the things and and decide on the respective years for each event
- to encourage group work, discussion and decision making
-to highlight key moments and encourage the learners to reflect on how they tie into other themes in the same time period
-to encourage the learners that they consider their country’s own history of development of women’s football, key moments, key actors, etc.
-to show the learners that they too can create these cards to present their country’s historical development
-to foster further discussion on how and why events took place

Description of the tool

The HERstory cards in “Annexe 4 – Discover Football: Female Perspectives” are designed as milestone snapshots that trace the evolution of women’s football across different countries, tournaments, and eras. Each card highlights a pivotal moment to emphasize women’s contributions and struggles in the sport. Each card is anchored around a key event (e.g., International Match, Pioneers, Federation Establishment, Unofficial World Cup). Many cards leave the year blank, inviting learners to investigate or match the event with its historical date. Each card also has a short description explains the event, its context, and its impact on women’s football. The repeated “HERstory” stamp reinforces the idea of reclaiming history through female perspectives. They mimic archival posters, match announcements, or federation minutes, blending historical authenticity with educational storytelling. Learners should, after use of this tool, leave with stronger knowledge base about women’s football history. They will also strengthen their critical thinking skills and interpersonal skills through working in smaller groups.
