A practical digital guide created during a Youth Exchange, offering learning outcomes, tools and methods on European values, inclusion, active citizenship and non-formal education for young people and youth workers.
The aim of this learning tool is to support young people and youth workers in understanding and promoting European values, inclusion and active citizenship through non-formal education.
The guide aims to:
- provide practical learning methods and tools tested during a Youth Exchange;
- strengthen participants’ awareness of the European Union and democratic values;
- encourage inclusion, intercultural dialogue and equal participation;
- support reflection on learning outcomes using the Youthpass approach;
- inspire further involvement in Erasmus+ and youth participation activities.
The tool is designed to be easily used, adapted and reused in youth exchanges, workshops and local youth activities.
This learning tool is a practical digital guide developed during the Youth Exchange “First Steps in the Union”, implemented within the Erasmus+ Programme. It is based on real activities, reflections and learning processes experienced by young participants and youth workers during an international youth exchange.
The guide brings together non-formal education methods, learning activities and reflection tools focused on European values, inclusion, intercultural dialogue and active citizenship. All content was co-created by participants with the support of youth leaders and facilitators, ensuring that the tool reflects the perspective, language and needs of young people.
The tool is structured in a clear and accessible way and can be used in youth exchanges, workshops, school activities, local youth work and training courses. It includes:
- descriptions of non-formal learning activities and methods;
- reflection questions and Youthpass-inspired exercises;
- practical examples of group work, simulations and discussions;
- ideas for dissemination and follow-up activities;
- guidance on creating safe, inclusive and participatory learning spaces.
Learning outcomes
By using this tool, young people and youth workers can:
- increase their understanding of the European Union, its values and democratic principles;
- develop skills in communication, teamwork, critical thinking and intercultural dialogue;
- strengthen attitudes of inclusion, empathy and respect for diversity;
- reflect on personal learning outcomes using the Youthpass approach;
- gain confidence to participate actively in their communities and future Erasmus+ projects;
- apply non-formal education methods in different youth and educational contexts.
The guide promotes learning by doing, reflection and peer learning. It is designed to be flexible, adaptable and reusable, supporting long-term impact beyond the original project and contributing to quality youth work at local and European level.

Needed materials (optional)

Projector or screen (optional, for group sessions)

Paper, pens and sticky notes (for reflection activities)
Open and safe learning space suitable for group work
Duration:
The tool is flexible and modular and can be used in different formats depending on the needs of the group.
15–30 minutes – short introduction, reflection exercise or discussion using selected parts of the guide
60–90 minutes – one complete learning session or workshop using one or two activities
2–3 hours – in-depth workshop including activities, group work and reflection
Several sessions – the guide can also be used as part of a longer youth exchange, training course or learning process over several days
The training process is based on non-formal education methods, including learning by doing, group work, discussion and reflection. The tool can be adapted to different age groups, experience levels and learning contexts.
