Aims of the tool

Educate young people on the advantages of sustainable mobility and motivate them to start cycling for transportation.

Lower the likelihood of accidents and injuries by providing formal road safety training.
Provide career prospects and job training in bike maintenance and sustainable transportation sectors.

Description of the tool

This tool is a structured educational program designed to provide marginalized youth with the knowledge and skills needed for sustainable urban mobility. It uses a mix of theoretical lessons and hands-on activities, such as "Bike Challenges" and "Safety Workshops," to build confidence and independence.

Learning Outcomes:
- Participants will understand the environmental and economic benefits of cycling compared to fossil fuel-based transport.
- Students will learn to safely navigate urban streets, follow traffic laws, and use proper hand signals.
- Participants will gain practical skills in basic bike maintenance, including tire pressure checks, chain lubrication, and cleaning.
- Youth will develop problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills through group activities and peer-led tasks.

The tool is available in English, Italian, German and Spanish.

Materials needed:

Essential Gear: Bicycles, correctly fitting helmets, reflective vests, and lights.

Maintenance Tools: Tire levers, wrenches, chain lubricant, and tire pumps.

Safety & Communication: First aid kit, maps/route guides, smartphones or communication devices, and safety handouts.

General: Water bottles, snacks, sun protection, whiteboard/markers, and visual aids like posters or videos.

Duration:

The curriculum is divided into modules with varying timeframes. A single activity, such as the "Bike Challenge," takes approximately 80 minutes to complete, broken down as follows:

Introduction: 5 minutes.

Preparation & Warm-up: 20 minutes.

Activity (e.g., Bike Tour): 30 minutes.

Interactive Session: 25 minutes.

Conclusion: 10 minutes.
Other workshops, like "Bike Safety," follow a similar structure lasting roughly 55-60 minutes. For a more comprehensive training, multiple activities can be combined to form a longer session of approximately 2 hours.
