Aims of the tool

The aim of this guide is to provide practical and adaptable methods for using dance and movement to promote inclusion, intercultural dialogue, and active participation in youth work.

It supports the development of key competences through non-formal education and contributes to creating inclusive and engaging learning environments.

Description of the tool

This guide was developed during the Erasmus+ Youth Exchange “Cultural Rhythms” as a result of a participant-led and non-formal learning process. It provides practical methods for using dance and movement as tools for inclusion, intercultural dialogue, and active participation.

The guide includes a variety of activities such as ice-breakers, group-building exercises, traditional dance sessions, creative movement, and reflection methods. Each activity is clearly structured with objectives, duration, group size, step-by-step instructions, and tips for adaptation.

The methods presented in this guide are simple, flexible, and suitable for different contexts, including youth exchanges, workshops, schools, and community projects. They can be adapted to different group sizes, ages, and levels of experience.

Materials needed:

No specific materials are required. Most activities can be implemented with minimal resources.

Optional materials may include:
- music and a speaker
- open space for movement
- flipchart or paper and markers
- laptop or phone for music or documentation
- comfortable clothing for participants

All activities are designed to be flexible and adaptable to low-resource settings.

Duration:

The activities in this guide are flexible and can be used individually or as part of a longer programme.

Single activities can take between 15 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the type and depth of the session. A full programme using this guide can be implemented over several days, for example during a youth exchange or workshop.

The training process follows a non-formal learning approach, including:
- introduction and warm-up (ice-breakers, energisers)
- group-building and trust activities
- main sessions (dance, co-creation, intercultural exchange)
- reflection and evaluation

Activities can be adapted to fit shorter sessions or extended programmes depending on the needs of the group.
