A practical handbook supporting primary teachers in recognising unconscious bias. Includes reflection exercises, observation tools, and mentorship strategies for creating fair and inclusive learning environments.

Aims of the tool

The handbook aims to support teachers in identifying conscious and unconscious bias, developing inclusive teaching practices, and fostering peer mentorship to promote equitable learning environments in primary education.

Description of the tool

The Bias-Free Classrooms Teacher’s Handbook is a practical professional development resource designed for primary school teachers. Developed through European cooperation, the handbook combines research findings, teacher surveys, and tested classroom practices to address bias in everyday teaching situations.

The handbook provides clear explanations of bias in education, helping teachers understand how expectations, language, assessment practices, and classroom interactions may unintentionally influence student participation and achievement. It includes a structured collection of ready-to-use tools such as reflection exercises, classroom observation checklists, inclusive discussion routines, and curriculum review activities.

A key component of the handbook is the mentorship approach, encouraging teachers to support colleagues through peer observation, feedback loops, and informal reflection groups, ensuring sustainable change beyond individual classrooms.

Learning outcomes:
Participants using the handbook will be able to:
- Recognise different types of bias affecting classroom practice.
- Reflect on their own teaching assumptions and decision-making processes.
- Apply practical tools to promote inclusive participation and fair treatment of students.
- Adapt teaching materials and classroom routines to reduce bias.
- Support colleagues through peer mentoring and collaborative reflection.
