Simulation Exercise, Exercise, Group Building Activity
A practice-based training booklet for youth workers using embodied and non-formal methods such as Yoga Meditation, Contact Improvisation, Theater Impro, and somatic practices to support well-being, inclusion, and participation in youth work.
The aims of the tool are to:
- Support youth workers in integrating embodied and non-formal learning approaches into their practice
- Strengthen emotional and body awareness, communication skills and group cohesion among young people
- Promote inclusive, experiential, and participatory youth work methods
- Translate body-based and somatic practices into safe, adaptable, non-therapeutic tools for youth work settings
- Encourage innovation and quality in non-formal education through embodied learning
This toolkit is based on the training course “Layers of Existence”, an experiential learning programme exploring the connection between body, breath, emotions, identity, and relationships.
It provides a collection of practical, non-formal education methods that support learning through embodiment — engaging participants not only cognitively, but also through movement, breath, and relational experience. The activities are designed to foster self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication skills, and group connection.
The toolkit is intended for youth workers, facilitators, and educators, including those with no prior experience in body-based practices. It offers simple, adaptable exercises that can be implemented in various settings such as youth exchanges, workshops, and training courses.
The methods are organised by thematic areas, including:
Body awareness and grounding
Breath and self-regulation
Trust and interpersonal connection
Communication and perspective
Expression and identity
Reflection and integration
Each activity includes instructions, objectives, reflection questions, and additional considerations, allowing facilitators to easily adapt them to their specific context and group needs.
This resource promotes a holistic approach to youth work, encouraging the integration of embodied learning as a way to enhance participation, inclusion, and personal development.
