A research-based learning tool exploring energy literacy among marginalised youth in Europe, identifying key barriers, knowledge gaps, and inclusive educational strategies to support civic engagement and a just energy transition

Aims of the tool

The aim of the tool is to strengthen inclusive energy literacy by supporting educators, youth workers, and organisations in understanding the needs of marginalised youth and applying participatory, justice-oriented approaches to climate and energy education

Description of the tool

Energy Literacy for Inclusion is a research report examining how marginalised youth across five European countries engage with energy and climate education. Using participatory action research and the Energy Adventure Room methodology, the study identifies key knowledge gaps, structural barriers, and motivating factors affecting young people with migrant backgrounds and disabilities. The report highlights low levels of systemic energy literacy, limited access to inclusive education, and strong demand for experiential, community-based learning. It concludes with practical recommendations for developing inclusive, justice-oriented energy literacy curricula that strengthen youth agency, civic participation, and engagement in a just energy transition.

The tool supports learning by:
- explaining key dimensions of energy literacy (technical, social, civic, and justice-oriented),
- highlighting structural, cultural, and economic barriers to participation,
- showcasing participatory methods such as the Energy Adventure Room,
- translating research findings into practical guidance for inclusive education.

Learning outcomes:
- understand energy literacy as a social, civic, and justice-related competence,
- identify barriers faced by marginalised youth in accessing energy education,
- apply participatory and experiential learning approaches,
- design more inclusive energy and climate education activities,
- support youth agency and civic engagement in the energy transition.
