Manual
This handbook draws on theatre workshops with youth to provide practical exercises, reflections, and guidance for youth workers, educators, mentors. It offers adaptable methods to create inclusive, engaging, and empowering experiences for young people.
To compile the knowledge, methods, and experiences gained from the Empatheatry project into a handbook for the general public.
To encourage youth workers, educators, and mentors to use theatre methods in their work with young people.
Demonstrate the use of innovative ways of working with young people using theatre techniques for youth development, emotional intelligence, and active participation.
This handbook was created by theatre educators as part of the Erasmus+ project Empatheatry: Development of Inclusive Theatre Groups for Emotionally Empowered and Active Youth. During the project, we held theatre workshops with underprivileged young people in Slovenia, Belgium, Spain, and Ireland. The handbook is based on our direct experience conducting these and similar workshops—what we did, what worked, the challenges we faced, and what we learned along the way.
The handbook is intended for youth workers, theatre pedagogues, mentors, teachers, and other professionals who work with young people with fewer opportunities and are seeking for new and innovative approaches to incorporate into their practice. It offers practical exercises, reflections on key topics, and advice on how to handle common challenges when leading creative workshops. These tools can help you implement more inclusive and engaging methods into your work.
You will find a collection of approaches and ideas that you can adapt to your own context and needs. They are not intended to present the right or only way to work with young people but to offer guidelines and possible methods to consider when developing and implementing activities. You can read it from start to finish or use it as a reference when you need ideas or support.
