Comprehensive guide for trainers supporting youth
workers in Europe. The handbook draws on the research and practical testing, pilot trainings realised through the project "Safety first! - Skills and competences for youth workers".

Aims of the tool

This handbook is intended for trainers working in the youth field to prepare youth professionals for safe work with young people, both emotionally and physically, during their training. The handbook draws on the research and practical testing, pilot trainings realised through the project "Safety first! - Skills and competences for youth workers, 2022-1-HU01-KA220-YOU-000087578” and aims to provide practical guidance for the design and implementation of effective training courses on this topic.

Creating a safe environment is essential to enable young people to participate fully in programs, to develop and to enjoy learning experiences. There are many different forms of youth work, each with different aspects of safety, and a comprehensive approach is needed. During the training, professional aspects are discussed alongside personal experiences to promote professional development.

Description of the tool

At the heart of this handbook are the foundational principles that guide safe youth work. Inclusivity ensures that all participants of the training and youth work, regardless of background, ability, or identity, feel respected and valued. It is important to take cultural differences and vulnerable groups into account.
Prevention involves identifying potential risks and proactively establishing strategies to mitigate them. Respect is cultivated through open communication and authentic interactions, forming the basis for emotional safety. Understanding, empathy and authenticity are important when communicating with young people. Participation highlights the role of young people as active contributors to the creation of safe environments. Participants should be involved in creating a safe environment, encouraging them to take responsibility for themselves and the group. Personal responsibility means that professionals should set an example of safe behavior and raise awareness.
Continuous reflection ensures that safety is never taken for granted, but revisited, reviewed, and refined regularly. Safety should be a matter of continuous improvement and the knowledge acquired should be put into practice.
