Exercise
Outline and practice key skills needed to facilitate and support group processes
Expected Outcome
The participants feel more confident in working in groups, to take initiative and facilitate the group (meetings, activities, etc.)
Part A: Leadership
1. Introduction to leadership
The session is about looking at oneself and others as peer leaders. Leadership is a complex issue that requires practice but also a sound understanding of our own predispositions.
2. Positive leadership potentials:
a) Activity:
The group is divided in 2 groups. Each of the groups has to find the fastest way to pass a ball around, keeping in mind that the ball has to touch everyone’s hands at least once. They have 10 minutes.
b)Debriefing
During the debriefing the facilitator tries and identifies the different types of leaders that have emerged during the exercise.
c)Presentation of the positive leadership potentials
3.Negative leadership potentials
a)Activity: The group is divided in 2 larger groups. Each group receives the following instructions:
You have 5 minutes to discuss together how to pass the whole team across from one side of the room to the other in the fastest possible way. 1 rule: you can only have a maximum of 4 points of contact with the floor at the same time. Just note that there will be hurdles on the way.
After exactly 5 minutes, each team is announced that they will be blindfolded before the race. Only one of them is not blindfolded. They have 2 minutes and 30 seconds to discuss how they will do.
b)Debriefing
During this debriefing, the facilitator tries and underlines the frustration felt by the participants and the designated leaders.
c)The negative potentials of a leader
Part B: Further than Tuckman
1. Introduction: The participants are reminded the Tuckman model presented earlier in the day. In 5 groups, they are to identify facilitation approaches and techniques as well as activities that encourage the different phases for a meeting, an event, an exchange, etc. They are encouraged to brainstorm. Their result is to be presented in a flipchart paper that will then be joined to the others.
2. Group division
3. Group work
4. Gallery visit
5. Debriefing
