Aims & objectives

The main aim of the VIRAGO project is to inspire young women from 5 EU Member states – Bulgaria, Estonia, Italy, Spain, and Romania as well as one EU Candidate country – Turkey, to take a more an important role in civic activities. the comparison between the experiences of the participants was essential to stimulate reflections on the current condition of women in the various partner states. Part of the youth exchange was dedicated to the design of proposals to be implemented in the countries of origin.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The target group was about 25 women, different ages, between 20 and 50 yo, from Italy, Spain, Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria

Training methods used & main activities

Ice breaking based on non-formal education, energizers and sessions.

For ex:

Session about engage, connect and empower.

Brief explanation of the three words.

Have 3 different activities, each related to one part of the 3 words strategy:

Empower: "The Mindfield" (10 min)
The group will be divided into pairs and various objects (chairs, tables, etc.) will be placed in a definite space. Team members verbally guide blindfolded partners through the minefield without touching them.

Engage: "The Debate" (30 min)
Divide your group into four teams, 6 people per team. Choose 4 relevant challenges that we are facing now
the main topic is Gender equality:
Pay gap
Maternity leave
Gender sterotypes
Tampon tax
Intersectionality
Abortion
Sexual education
gender based violence
Prepare papers with challenges and let them draw one. Each team will defend the challenge and explain why we have to be more aware of this, when another team plays the opponent role in the debate, challenging the arguments and views of the first one.
After the debate, the other participants judge which team has been the most convincing.
Before the debate, find the three core ideas each of you want to introduce and decide two people who are “experts” on them. When the first debate starts, have two teams stand/sit facing each other. Each idea will be challenged for 1 minute - the one participant introduces it and the opposing team will say their opposition which the first team’s pair can explain again. If someone else in the team wants to participate as well, it is allowed. Make sure they include numbers in their arguments.

Timeframe:
Preparation for the debate - 10min
1st team + decision (5min)
2nd team + decision (5min)
3rd team + decision (5min)
4th team + decision (5min)

Connect: "The 2 truths and a lie" (15 min)
Group by countries and list 2 truths and one lie about your country. Use stereotypes and actual challenges to confront the stereotypes. The other participants from other countries vote which of the three is the lie. They have 5 minutes to come up with statements and other 10 minutes are for presenting and guessing.

Outcomes of the activity

the participants developed a greater awareness of the project topic and acquired the rudiments of design to propose their ideas locally.
