Aims & objectives

The five-day Training of Trainers (ToT) aimed to strengthen participants' competences in designing, preparing, delivering and evaluating effective training activities. The programme focused on developing the knowledge, practical skills and facilitation approaches required to deliver participatory, learner-centred training in professional and organisational settings.
The training addressed the need to develop confident and competent trainers who can facilitate learning processes, engage diverse groups, communicate effectively, manage group dynamics and adapt their methods to participants' needs.
The main objectives were to:
• Develop participants' understanding of the role, responsibilities and competences of an effective trainer.
• Strengthen skills in training design, session planning and the formulation of learning objectives.
• Develop practical facilitation, presentation and communication skills.
• Introduce participatory and non-formal learning methods that encourage active involvement and collaborative learning.
• Strengthen participants' ability to manage group dynamics, facilitate discussions and respond to different learning needs.
• Develop competences in providing constructive feedback, assessing learning and reflecting on training practice.
• Enable participants to prepare and deliver training sessions using appropriate methodologies and facilitation techniques.
The programme combined conceptual input, practical exercises, collaborative activities and opportunities to practise training delivery. It aimed to help participants transfer their learning into their own professional and organisational contexts.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The training took place in Muscat, Oman, and was organised by the International Institute for Sustainable Development.

The training brought together participants from Oman, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, the United States and Canada, creating an international learning environment with participants from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. The target group consisted of individuals seeking to strengthen their competences in training delivery, group facilitation and adult learning.

I, Redoin Khlifate from Morocco, served as the trainer responsible for delivering the five-day Training of Trainers (ToT) programme.

The international composition of the group provided opportunities for intercultural exchange, peer learning and the sharing of professional experiences across different national and organisational contexts. Through practical exercises, collaborative activities and group discussions, participants were encouraged to exchange perspectives, learn from one another and develop training and facilitation skills that could be applied in their respective professional settings.

Training methods used & main activities

The training used participatory and practice-oriented methodologies to support the development of practical training and facilitation competences.
Methods included:
• Interactive presentations: Introducing key concepts and principles of effective training, facilitation and adult learning.
• Group discussions: Encouraging participants to exchange experiences, identify common challenges and explore different approaches to training.
• Experiential learning: Enabling participants to develop skills through practical exercises, followed by reflection and feedback.
• Collaborative group work: Supporting participants in working together to design training activities and solve facilitation challenges.
• Training-session design: Guiding participants in defining learning objectives, structuring sessions and selecting appropriate learning methods.
• Practical facilitation exercises: Giving participants opportunities to practise communication, group facilitation and participant engagement techniques.
• Micro-training and presentations: Providing opportunities for participants to practise delivering short training sessions and receive constructive feedback.
• Peer learning: Encouraging participants to learn from one another's experiences, strengths and approaches.
• Reflection and self-assessment: Supporting participants in identifying their strengths, development needs and priorities for improving their training practice.
• Feedback and evaluation: Exploring ways to assess learning, provide constructive feedback and improve training quality.
These methods emphasised learning by doing, active participation, reflection and the practical application of training skills.

Outcomes of the activity

The training aimed to strengthen participants' ability to design and facilitate structured, participatory and learner-centred training activities.
The intended outcomes included improved understanding of training design and facilitation principles; enhanced communication and presentation skills; greater familiarity with participatory learning methodologies; and increased confidence in managing group activities and supporting participant engagement.
Through practical exercises, collaborative work and training-delivery practice, participants had opportunities to apply the concepts introduced during the course and receive feedback on their facilitation approaches.
The programme also supported professional exchange and reflection on how effective training methods can be applied in different organisational and professional contexts.
The activity can be documented through the original training programme, attendance records, participant evaluations, certificates, training materials and confirmation from the organising organisation. Any available official publication or webpage documenting the activity can also be included.
