Training for trainers in Open Youth Work

The training activity took place
in European Youth Centre, Strasbourg
organised by ECYC & European Youth Centre of the Council of Europe
26 February - 5 March, 2006

Aims & objectives

* Identify the key characteristics and qualities of an effective trainer
* Understand the role of a trainer in a training activity
* Articulate and utilise a wide range of training tools and techniques
* Identify the range of issues involved in preparing a training programme
* Explain a number of ways of handling difficult situations which may arise during training
* Understand and explain the basic principles of the theory of different learning styles
* Plan, prepare and present individual and group presentations
* Identify the purpose of evaluating training, and some ways of doing this
* Identify a range of sources of high quality resources and materials relevant to training youth leaders
* Consider how they might use these skills in their local communities and organisations.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The team and the group of participants consisted people from the following countries: Belgium, Finland, CYprus, Georgia, UK, Romania, Armenia, Iceland, Russia, Poland, Moldova, Bulgaria, Czech republic, Malta, Serbia, Estonia, Turkey, Spain.

Training methods used & main activities

- interactive lectures (input + exercises)
- small group discussions & small group work (planning & delivering training)
- simulation games
- a variety of games

Outcomes of the activity

The participants were able to plan and deliver some training during the activity and get some feedback from the group as well as from the team of trainers. They also learned about how to "read" the group during training and how to tailor the training activities accordingly.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

I was the team leader, responsible for the trainers as well as of the activity report to the Council of Europe.

I worked on this training for 7 days as a full time trainer.
