Together we learn–Together we stop discrimination

The training activity took place
in Luxembourg-City, Luxembourg
organised by 4motion (LU) and European peer Training Organisation (BE)
24-30 November 2013

Aims & objectives

The objectives of the training for the participants were to:
- Develop self-awareness and understanding of an individual’s own cultural identity;
- Engage in an ongoing self-examination of one’s role in either perpetuating or confronting discrimination;
- Develop the ability to work effectively in diverse settings;
- Recognize the spheres of influence in which one can act in its daily life;
- Identify personal and group actions for change.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

- The target group of the training was young people (18-35) with experience and/or a specific interest in the fields of youth work, social work, intercultural learning, diversity education, peace building, conflict transformation and mediation, who are committed to multiply the outcomes of the training course in their own environments.
- We had 18 participants from 19 to 34 years-old of 9 nationalities: Brazilian, Dutch, Estonian, German, Greek, Luxembourgish, Polish, Romanian, Slovenian.

Training methods used & main activities

The activities used in this training were
interactive, experiential, and rooted in the
principles of non formal education, peer training, diversity education and intercultural learning. Participants were asked to share experiences and opinions, to practice active listening skills with others, and to learn emotionally as well as intellectually.
The pedagogical program of the training was based upon significant research in the field on prejudice reduction that cites the following as key skills to develop in the prevention and unlearning
of prejudice and discriminatory behaviors: empathy, self-esteem, critical thinking, cooperative learning, high expectations, diverse environments and social action.

Outcomes of the activity

We can say that the train was a success because 15 participants out of 18 completed their certification cycle by attending an EPTO "train-the-trainer" training in 2014 and 3 even specialized as professional trainers by attending an EPTO "peers-to-professionals" training in 2015. Most of them are still active as peer trainers in the EPTO network and develop educational and social projects in their own local organisations.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

I was a junior trainer working with an older and more experienced peer trainer, a female German facilitator. We designed the whole programme and agenda together, using the EPTO methodology and manual for peer trainers on diversity and anti-discrimination. Each of us facilitated half of the activities. We had daily debriefings in which we gave each other feedback about facilitation and group dynamics, adapting the agenda for the next day to match the group's needs, etc.

I worked on this training for 5 days as a full time trainer.
