The Future of Children

The training activity took place
in Duzce, Turkey
organised by Group European Eagles
08 - 14 November 2011

Aims & objectives

The prometer of this training course is an informal group combined of university students. Their aim as a group to define the aspects which lead people commit a crime. In Turkey, there are a lot of children who live in the streets and tend to commit a crime. Most of them do not go to school and are able to be addicted to drugs. Therefore the major aim of the training course to reflect those children's life and get a deeper look at them and find ways to protect them and prevent them to commit a crime. Another objective of the training course is to reflect the prisoners' profile before, during and after their sentences. To get a closer look of criminal's inner world, I issued the whole life of the most famous criminals of all times. Therefore we had an idea the sense of the psychopatha and the sociopaths.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

There were 3 participants from Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Czech Republic and Turkey in the training course. They were also university students who were utterly motivated to gain the competences from the training course.

Training methods used & main activities

To have a general overview of the participants about crime, I started the training course by asking verbal questionnaire with the yes/no questions such as if they read or watch crime news from media, if they put themselves in the suspect's or criminal's shoes, if so what they think about it, etc.
In another session, I introduced types of crime as a lecture. Therefore the participants got used to some terminology based on crime.
Later as a brainstorm what influences people to commit a crime. Then from the experts' report, we collected them under the 10 main categories.
Then I delivered the lives of the most famous crimals of all times, an arsonist, a serial killer, a thief, and the gunman in Norway. We had a closer look at their pyscology before they committed crime (started from their childhood), during they were committing the crime and during their sentence.
As a puzzle activity, I delivered participants pieces of paper with the descriptions, distinctive features, relation with others and reasons whic they lead to crime to put them under the headlines of certain people: street children, Roma people, drug addicts, gangs and prostitutes (we questioned their tendency to commit a crime). Then I let the participants think about if their puzzle is correct.
I had them watch the youtube videos of the street children and a prison in Turkey. Later we talked about their present situation and what might be done for their inclusion in the society.
In the final session about the training topic, we produced some ways how to protect people to commit a crime as an individual, a state, a school, a teacher, a parent, and as an NGO.

Outcomes of the activity

At the end of the training course, the participants were able to gain knowledge and skills on prevention of crime. With the new competences, the participants will be able to help the society become a better place as an activist and helpful person for the people around.
