Aims & objectives

The training aimed to strengthen participants' understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and develop their capacity to integrate the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into their professional activities, organisational initiatives and community-based actions.
The activity addressed the need to increase awareness of the global sustainable development agenda, strengthen understanding of the interconnected social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability, and encourage participants to identify practical ways of contributing to the achievement of the SDGs in their respective national and local contexts.
The main objectives were to:
• Introduce the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, including their targets and underlying principles.
• Strengthen understanding of the interconnections between sustainable development, social inclusion, environmental protection and economic development.
• Explore the roles of individuals, civil society organisations, institutions and communities in advancing the SDGs.
• Encourage participants to identify sustainable development challenges and opportunities in their own contexts.
• Develop skills in collaborative problem-solving and the identification of practical initiatives linked to the SDGs.
• Promote international cooperation, knowledge exchange and intercultural dialogue around shared development challenges.
• Encourage participants to translate their understanding of the SDGs into practical ideas and actions within their professional and community environments.
The training supported capacity building by combining conceptual understanding with participatory activities and collaborative reflection, helping participants connect the global development framework with local and regional realities.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The training took place in Tunis, Tunisia, and was organised by the International Institute for Sustainable Development.
The participants came from Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Morocco and Sudan, bringing together individuals from six countries across North Africa and the wider Arab region.
The group provided an international learning environment in which participants could exchange perspectives on sustainable development priorities, discuss common regional challenges and explore differences in national and local contexts.
I, Redoin Khlifate from Morocco, served as the trainer responsible for delivering the three-day training programme.
The international composition of the group supported intercultural learning, regional cooperation and the exchange of experiences concerning the implementation of the SDGs in different social, economic and environmental contexts.

Training methods used & main activities

The training used participatory and non-formal learning approaches to encourage active engagement, collaborative learning and the practical exploration of sustainable development issues.
Methods included:
• Interactive presentations: Introducing the 2030 Agenda, the 17 SDGs and the principles of sustainable development.
• Brainstorming: Exploring participants' existing knowledge of the SDGs and identifying major sustainability challenges in their communities.
• Group discussions: Examining the social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and their interconnections.
• Collaborative group work: Encouraging participants to analyse development challenges and exchange perspectives from their respective countries.
• Case-study analysis: Exploring practical sustainable development issues and discussing possible responses.
• Problem-solving activities: Supporting participants in identifying opportunities for local initiatives and actions related to the SDGs.
• Peer learning: Facilitating the exchange of experiences, practices and ideas among participants from different countries.
• Participatory exercises: Encouraging participants to connect individual SDGs with broader development priorities and identify potential synergies.
• Reflection and action planning: Supporting participants in considering how to apply their learning in their professional, organisational or community contexts.
These approaches aimed to make the learning process interactive, collaborative and relevant to participants' experiences, rather than relying exclusively on theoretical presentations.

Outcomes of the activity

The training aimed to strengthen participants' understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals and their relevance to national, regional and local development priorities.
The intended outcomes included improved familiarity with the 2030 Agenda and its 17 goals; a better understanding of the interconnected dimensions of sustainable development; increased awareness of the contribution that individuals, organisations and communities can make; and enhanced capacity to identify practical initiatives related to the SDGs.
Through group discussions, collaborative exercises and the exchange of national experiences, participants had opportunities to explore common challenges, consider possible solutions and connect global development priorities with local realities.
The training also provided a platform for regional dialogue and knowledge exchange among participants from Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Morocco and Sudan.
The activity can be documented through the original training programme, attendance records, participant evaluations, certificates, training materials and confirmation from the organising organisation. Any official publication or webpage documenting the activity can be added where available.
