Aims & objectives

A chance to learn more about entrepreneurship competence development, entrepreneurial culture and opportunities for young people in the Baltic sea region through non-formal, experiential and adventure education, and practical sailing experience.

The objectives of the training:
*) to introduce on how to combine practical sailing experience with non-formal education and use it in youth work;
*) to develop entrepreneurship knowledge, skills and attitudes that are needed to support young people in their entrepreneurial competence development;
*) to learn and create new non-formal education methods on how to train youth to become more entrepreneurial;
*) to discover sailing as a self-development and entrepreneurship competence building tool for themselves and working with youth;
*) to explore entrepreneurship opportunities and cultural differences in the Baltic sea region.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

Participants: 20 youth workers and leaders from Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.
Team: 2 trainers from Latvia and Lithuania and 2 skippers from Latvia and Lithuania.

Training methods used & main activities

Team building and getting to know each other activities, practical tasks and group discussions for the discovery of 8 life-learning competences on sailing vessels, learning diaries and learning-buddies, group dynamics in theory and practice, learning by doing approach while practicing sailing as a method in youth work and tool for personal development; experiential and adventurous education in theory and practice; 48h challenge in business idea's development and testing in export environment, business canvas for business ideas development and business canvas YOU for personal development. Project planning and evaluation. Group experience evaluation. Video-reflection task. Talent Show. Creation of visual dictionary of Nautical terms.

Outcomes of the activity

The participants improved their knowledge, skills and attitudes towards entrepreneurship as well as practical sailing skills. Combining of the sailing and the entrepreneurial education provided new approaches in entrepreneurship competence and self-initiative building as much as new entrepreneurial knowledge, skills and success stories. By experiencing and evaluating different entrepreneurship learning tasks, the youth workers tested different tools on how to develop project management skills, implement the idea, work in a team, think strategically, take the decisions and prioritize, organize the time, implement entrepreneurship theory in practice, to take an initiative and react properly to unpredictable situations. The participants learned how to support youth during entrepreneurial learning process enhancing their self-esteem and encouraging their involvement in entrepreneurial activities in the future. Intercultural learning environment strengthened youth workers' network in the Baltic States and enriched their English vocabulary with professional terms both in business and sailing.
