Participatory Media & Collective approach - Training within the project "Conflict as catalyst for transformation"

The training activity took place
in Laguépie (France)
organised by Solidarité Jeunesses
16th - 20th October 2019

Aims & objectives

Be The Change is an innovative training pathway aiming at reinforcing skills in interpersonal conflict management, through their transformation in positive changes. Workshops are based on a participative and multidisciplinary methods with combining approaches of non-formal education, art (video and theatre), e-learning and formal education.

This training was the second one out of two face-to-face trainings and main objectives were:

1) To develop skills in conflict management.
2) To acquire knowledge on conflict theory.
3) To transmit innovative tools for conflict management.

All participant organizations are into IVS, which means they often face conflict situations (interpersonal, intercultural, social...). This training aimed to provide different tools for them to be used. Te general idea of the training was mixing some conflict theory & techniques to apply this theory together with our participatory video and media approach for non formal management of conflict in order to improve the skills of participant organizations on this specific area.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

Trainers group was conformed by three people: Laetitia Barbry (France), María Lobo (Spain) and me. As said before, this training was part of a project in which other trainers from UK were involved. I was part of the pedagogical team so I worked together with them in different meeting.

Target group were organizations across Europe, most of them part of the CCIVS network: B-Link (Italy), Concordia UK (United Kingdom), Coventry University (United Kingdom), Egyesek (Hungary), Elix (Greece), E-graines -Pimenko (France), Inex-SDA (Czech Republic), Proyecto Kieu (Spain), Solidarités Jeunesses (France) adn AGARESO (Spain).

All participants were from this organizations.

Training methods used & main activities

The training was held during 5 days and we mixed two different approaches "Collective Approach" by Laetitia and "Participatory Media Approach" by María and me. In order to blend this two approaches we made some online previous work together plus a two-days preparation meeting. We wanted the participant to feel everything was connected (not attending to different trainings in one).

Our approach was based on learning by doing and peer to peer learning, together with best practices showcases and some theory input. Some of the activities I designed and facilitated for this training were:

1) Instagram Stories: In small groups, participants were asked to discuss what was their position towards conflict by using Instagram stories as technical tool having, to "story" a collective answer to the question: “How can we be the change?”. This first media creation step (as all the fore comings) ended up showing the videos and having a discussion about conflict as a catalyst for transformation.

2) Perspectives: This activity started by introducing some audiovisual language inputs, mostly about framing: when filming something, which things do we include in our frame and which ones do we leave outside? After that, we gave the participants a card with a conflict situation and the mission of filming this conflict but having an specific role on it. Also, they had to film it in only 4 shots. They didn't know that the situation of all groups was the same, we just gave them different roles, so at the end the resulting "movies" were very different. This activity was useful for them to be aware of how your role and perspective changes the conflict itself and also to provide a replicable activity for them

3) "Cartography of Emotional City: the power of environment".

In this activity, they have a printed map of an imaginary city and in 3-5 people group they had sticker of some common places in any city (market, park, school, community centres...). First task was to stick this icons around their map. Then, individually, they should stick green stickers on places where they felt good or comfortable, and red ones in the ones where they felt unsafe or uncomfortable. Once this task was done, again in group, they should discuss together and try to find common issues (by gender, by age, by cultural identity...). At last, they should film a tour around the city with voiceover narrating their conclusions. We watched all the maps and discussed about them. Again, this activity is replicable and useful to test if there's any environmental issue that could trigger a conflict, it's useful for prevention but also reflection about this issues.

4) PV process: we arrange a small PV activity in which they had to work in group on producing filming and editing a short movie about “Conflict as an opportunity for transformation”. We introduced some collective intelligence methodologies for brainstorming and prioritisation, some communication skills (defining your objective to deliver a clear message) and facilitated the creative process. All in all, PV always brings up some key skills for conflict management as it is a motivating activity in which all the team is responsible of the whole result, they have to work together and understand each other and at the end, the sense of achievement it's very relevant in terms on empowerment and self-esteem.

Outcomes of the activity

This training integrated in "Be The Change MOOC" that will be released in summer 2020. The translation from the face-to-face training into an online training was made during a Participatory Media LAB within the same project that took place in February 2020. I was also part of this LAB.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

Within the trainers team I was one of the two experts on "Participatory Media". Also, as it is a training within a project that was aimed to end up with a MOOC as the main output, I participated in different tasks related with the training an project:

- Preparatory meetings in Paris and Santiago de Compostela. Design and development of the training itinerary.
- Video guidelines for the MOOC
- Design of the training (with Laetitia & Maria).
- Preparation of the media activities (together with María)
- Facilitation of the trainig (with Lae & María).

I worked on this training for 5 + 2 preparation days as a full time trainer.
