Message in a Bottle

The training activity took place
in Sinop, Turkey
organised by Sinop Açıkdeniz Yelken Kulübü / Sinop Offshore Sailing Club
12 - 19 October 2013

Aims & objectives

When you sail, you are alone on the sea. You have to decide what to do and you are responsible for your safety. You take initiatives for yourself. Sea and sailing are the great elements to practice the leadership skills and develop participants' competences. To do this, the participants should also have some basic techniques on sailing and they should learn about the form of the boat by making model boats. "Message in a Bottle" project with its 30 participants from 7 different countries with its new tools which were generated only for this training aimed to provide sailing basics and leadership skills. The sailing club SAYK has been already giving sailing courses for the inhabitants. With this training activity, they were able to work in an international level.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

In the "Message in a Bottle" Youth in Action 3.1 training course, the participants were from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Slovenia, Ukraine and Turkey. There were 30 participants total.

Training methods used & main activities

"Message in a Bottle" training course provided leadership skills for its participants with Non-Formal Education methods and techniques such as icebreakers, group work, pair work, simulation games, discussions, and lecture as well as basic sailing training which has a close contact with the leadership skills.
As for risk assessment session, I provided some pictures which include risks such as: a person who is doing skydiving, a toddler who is being given a shot, a mouse which is trying to take the cheese from a mouse trap, a scuba diver who is diving with the sharks, etc. We talked about the pictures and voted if there is a risk or not. Participants were allowed to make comments on the pictures and there were discussions if it is needed to take those risks. We also discussed about the biggest risks we have ever taken and why we have taken.

Outcomes of the activity

The training activity provided participants some basic sailing techniques, paddling, scuba diving in theory and model boat making competencies. The participants also found an opportunity to learn by doing in a multicultural environment. They also have some competencies on risk assessment and basic seamanship skills.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

I was the trainer in the training course. I held the name games, get to know each other sessions, team building games, and evaluation activities. I generated "Message in a Bottle", which is also the title of the compound of tools I created for this training course. Throughout the training course, I designed, managed, evaluated all the activities and helped participants for their learning in a multicultural environment with the non-formal learning methods.

I worked on this training for 6 days days as a full time trainer.
