Aims & objectives

This project was focused on new media, especially social media networks as a part of everyday online communication practices of young people. During the TC participants learned through non-formal education, how to use different new media channels and applications to promote respect for cultural differences, sense of solidarity and foster intercultural dialogue. Participants also used new social media skills like writing, making photography, filmmaking, creating music to transmit positive messages on the Internet and shaping a society based on tolerance and cultural diversity.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

This TC gather 26 participants (youth workers and youth activists) from 23 countries all around the world. Participants represent next countries: Argentina, Uganda, Italy, Spain, Romania, Netherlands, Greece, Slovenia, Portugal, Norway, Denmark, Bulgaria, Poland, Austria, Croatia, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, Malta, Slovak Republic.

Training methods used & main activities

At this TC we were using "storage" of Salto Youth tools and activities. We were trying to use as much as we can and connect them with our topic. Some of methods and activities we did are:
- Presenting the dynamics and features of hate speech against migrants and refugees on new media (particularly Social Media), as well as the characteristics of new media communication which make them crucial vehicles of violent, discriminatory and have enticing speech against migrants and refugees. Presentation of specific instances of cyber-bullying in today’s communication on new media/Social Media.

- Identifying the gap-holes in national/European policy approaches and new media services’ providers’ methods to contrasting new media hate speech against migrants and refugees suitable to be filled by youth engagement and youth sector activism

- Presenting best practices of NFE based educational endeavors targeted at fighting new media hate speech against migrants and refugees among young people from Europe and the World, with a particular focus on approaches developed by youth NGOs. Introducing participants to the No Hate Speech Manual “WE CAN!” as a good practice for youth NGOs and educators to contrast hate speech narratives.

Outcomes of the activity

Some of the learning outcomes are:
- Knowledge about hate speech dynamics against migrants and refugees on new media, with a particular focus on Social Media.

- Knowledge of the have enticing factors and established practices which make new media and in particular Social Media, key avenues of online defamation, discrimination and hate speech against migrants and refugees.

- Skills to identify weaknesses and gap-holes left by national/European as well as new media services’ providers’ approaches to the issue of new media hate speech against migrants and refugees with a view to identifying avenues for the potential of youth engagement and youth sector activism.

- Knowledge of NFE initiatives, approaches and methodologies developed by youth NGOs from across Europe and the World for the purposes of fighting new media hate speech against migrants and refugees through education of young people.

- Enhanced attitudes of proactive engagement in contrasting new media hate speech against migrants and refugees among young people in participants’ areas of operation through NFE methods, acquired through the inspirational potential of success stories.

Your tasks and responsibilities within the team

I was the main trainer of the group of 4 trainers. My responsibility was to lead session mostly connected with refugees and new media on refugees.
Other three trainers were covering other activities and assist me if it was needed.

I worked on this training for 5 days as a full time trainer.
