Aims & objectives

The aim was to train participants in the foundations of facilitating Rainbow of Desires techniques.

Target group & international/intercultural composition of the group & team

The group was made up of cultural youth workers from organisations working in Wales, Estonia, Portugal, Romania and Italy.

Training methods used & main activities

The Rainbow of Desires are methods developed by Augusto Boal to externalise and process internal oppressions.

This makes the techniques of Rainbow of Desires the perfect tools to help a person develop both socially and personally. This method is used to make people analyse their inner oppressions, to inspire and give strength to take control and be responsible of their actions, decisions and choices. A person can take control over his life again.

Among the exercises learnt were -

The Rainbow of Desires: A volunteer externalizes with the help of the other participants the constellation of their desires in a situation where we don’t know what we want, or where we are not getting what we desire.

“Cops in the Head” Image and their anti-bodies: The externalization with the help of the others the 'police' in our mind who stop us doing what we want or make us do things that we don't want, and then the creation of their 'anti-bodies.

Screen Image: Several volunteers share a situation where they struggle in a relationship, and somehow don't 'see' and are not 'seen' by the other - the 'masks' we wear are explored.

Circuit of Rituals and Masks: A volunteer offers a situation where the different masks they wear in different environments - e.g. work, home, pub... can be exchanged to reveal perhaps more effective ways of behaving.

Rashmon’s exercise: As in the Kurosawa Film we explore a situation from the viewpoint of all the participants.

Kaleidoscopic Image: Several images are offered of the same situation and the protagonist is invited to pass through each as if through a fair.

The Analytical Image: A complex and intense method of exploring situations where there is no clear oppression. Just the sense that one is unable to realize one's desire.

Participants were offered the opportunity to facilitate one of these exercises and to receive feedback.
